The Spanish Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM) has launched a DVD called “La red de Parques Nacionales de España”. This is a documentary film that shows the geology, flora and fauna of the 14 Spanish National Parks, a network of protected areas selected to conserve the best of the Spanish natural heritage.

The documentary film starts with an introduction about the biological and geographical characteristics of the Spanish territory and the different habitats included in it, which biodiversity is reflected in the Spanish national parks network.

The film continues showing the different ecosystems of these parks starting with the four mountainous parks located in the Spanish peninsula: Picos de Europa, Ordesa, Monte Perdido, Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici and Sierra Nevada.

Following, the film shows the Tablas de Daimiel and Doñana wetland parks which are resting places for migrating birds and fundamental areas for the survival of a large number of species. Likewise, the Monfragüe y Cabañeros national parks present the Mediterranean vegetation ecosystem where the most representative species of the Spanish wild life live including the Iberian lynx and the Iberian imperial eagle.

The documentary film also dedicates a chapter to the maritime-terrestrial parks formed by islands located in the Atlantic Ocean in front of Galicia and the islands of the Cabrera Archipelago in the Mediterranean sea, as well as the parks that include insular ecosystems and sea bottoms located in the Canary Islands. These parks are the Garajonay, Caldera de Taburiente, Teide and Timanfaya, magnificent representatives of the varied natural life of the Canary archipelago.

The DVD can be acquired at the publishing department within the national parks administration or by email to the address publicaciones@oapn.es

New destinations directly from Tenerife

The Tenerife Tourism Corporation has presented last Thursday in Paris the direct flight that will connect the island to one of the main European capitals. The airline in charge of providing this service will be Air Europa.

A delegation form Tenerife travelled to Paris to take part in the launching of the new connection that also served to present the tourist offer of the island to the media and French tour operators and travel agents.

The vice president of the insular council and Councillor of Tourism, José Manuel Bermúdez said that, “this new flight connection fosters our opportunities to increase our participation in this market reinforcing the flight connection from Paris to Tenerife that Iberia Airlines is providing nowadays and the connection from Marseille to Tenerife that Air Europe offers”. Bermúdez said that now the challenge is to make these flights have full occupancy to strengthen Tenerife’s presence in France.

Air Europe will connect Paris to Tenerife South with regular flights all over the year on Thursdays and Sundays. A Boeing 737-800 which has a capacity for 190 passengers will allow the increase in the number of French tourists that visit the island. In 2009 they represented the 2% of the overall number.

The new route will be advertised through promotional spots in every Air Europe flight for three months and also in their in-flight magazine. Tenerife Island’s tourist offer will be also advertised on the Globalia Group websites. In France, a series of advertising spots will be presented in radios, the press, travel agencies and travel magazines. The Tenerife Tourism Corporation will be sponsoring trips to the island for tour operators, travel agents and French media as a complementary strategy for the tourist promotion of the island.

The launching ceremony included several activities like a workshop with the presence of 18 representatives of the tourist industry from Tenerife including hotels and travel agencies. The participants to this event also had the chance to participate in an appetizers demonstration conducted by the chef of the Jardín Tropical Hotel in Tenerife, Alvaro Garcés. The activities were complemented by a wine tasting organized by the wineries Cumbres de Abona, Domínguez and Viñátigo and a luncheon to present Canary products.

The 7th edition of the International Parrot Convention that took place between the 20th and the 25th of September 2010 at Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, was the fifth congress organized by Loro Parque since 1986. This parrot convention is organized every four years by Loro Parque Foundation to provide experts and bird enthusiasts an opportunity to learn more about parrots and as a way to gather and share information. The event included lectures and workshops given by parrot experts about parrots’ biology, diet, management and other subjects of interest.

This convention is promoted and supported by Mr. Wolfgang Kiessling, who is the owner of Loro Parque and a parrots’ enthusiast that has studied these birds for decades and founded in Tenerife Island a research and protection centre that has become a point of reference for the study and protection of parrots worldwide.

Loro Parque started as a zoo where parrots and other animals where exhibited and performed shows for the visitors. Soon, the zoo expanded to include sharks and other sea animals that vary from dolphins to penguins that live in specially designed areas that emulate their natural habitats. Besides, the park has gorillas, orangutans, and monkeys apart form other exotic animals.

Aqualand is a water park and aquarium located in Costa Adeje, Tenerife that is celebrating these days the birth of another dolphin in their facilities. The newborn dolphin is a male whose mother was also born in this aquarium some years ago. The baby dolphin is in good health conditions and it will participate in the park’s exhibitions in three or four years. The specimen, that was born the 12th of August after a 52 weeks gestation period and three hours labour, weighted 15 kilograms and measured 150 centimetres long.

This new dolphin born in the Aqualand Costa Adeje Park is a very lively one and he started emitting sounds only three hours after his birth. Shortly, he was suckling regularly and swimming next to his mother, Yemaya. This is the second offspring of Yemaya that had her first baby when she was only seven years old, becoming one of the most premature dolphin mothers in Europe. “Yemaya is a fabulous mother that will look after her baby zealously. She demonstrated her motherly devotion with her fist baby breastfeeding it for three years”, said José Luis Barbero, technical director of the dolphins complex in Aqualand.

“Yemaya is a very sensitive animal that requires a special attention from her trainers and keepers. In return for all the attention, she gives us continuous demonstrations of trust and love”, added Barbero. This is the reason why Aqualand has included her in the dolphins’ breeding program. Aqualand Costa Adeje is the first dolphins’ breeding complex established in Europe and it has been recognized by the European Association for Aquatic Mammals as one of the leading centres in terms of number of births.
One of the reasons for Aqualand to be leading the dolphins’ breeding centres in Europe is their percentage of successful births that reaches 100%, but also the number of births the centre has, which including this new dolphin reaches 15 specimens, taking into account that the reproductive cycle of this species last between three and five years. Counting with eleven births in thirteen years, Aqualand Costa Adeje is part of the elite of the European dolphins’ aquariums.

The park counts with one of the best facilities in the entire Europe for the breeding of these aquatic animals, and it also counts with a team of veterinaries and keepers specialized in these cetaceans that look after them 24 hors a day. The state-of-the-art technology the centre uses, allows them to imitate marine habitats ensuring the comfort of the dolphins.
Regular controls are carried out to check dolphins’ health conditions during the gestation and weaning period that can last 24 months depending on the characteristics of each new specimen.

For the moment, the newborn baby is kept isolated with his mother that looks after him and breastfeed him. This dolphin doesn’t have a name yet. Among the most voted names is “Waca”.

The chief director of the natural environment department within the Canary Islands Government, Francisco Martín, personally supervised the forest replanting works that are carried out at the tree pines area located in the municipality called La Orotava in Tenerife.

The area, which is located between the Tigaiga and La Resbala-Mamio sides, was damaged last February as consequence of the storm “Cintia” that snapped many pine trees in 2,700Has of the “Parque Natural de la Corona Forestal”.
As consequence of this strong storm, between 15 to 100 percent of the pines trees fell as a result of the strong winds. For this reason, a series of measures had to be taken to reforest the affected areas.
The plantation of new trees will start on September, taking advantage of the favourable weather conditions, when the personnel in charge of the replanting will make a series of holes for the subsequent plantation of cloudy forest species. The Initiative is carried out in the framework of the Canary program for the protection of forest resources against natural disasters.
Up to this moment, it has been conducted a study of the pine tree forest affected by the storm and the area has been divided in different sectors to start the recovery actions simultaneously. The objective of these works has been to prepare the ground for the trees replanting including the cut down of the fallen trees and branches to clear the area. The wood and vegetal wastes have been collected and crushed, and then incorporated to the organic layer of the soil.

The personnel of Loro Parque have changed animals’ diet this summer to help them cool down during these hot days. Gorillas, tigers, and chimps enjoyed these days eating frozen food provided by their trainers and zookeepers. Apart from cool baths in the pools and tanks, they enjoyed eating fruit, vegetables and fish ice cubes specially prepared for them. The intention was to provide animals with delightful food and at the same time keep them refreshed and healthy. The staff of the park says that like humans, animals notice and suffer hot weather and they usually look for a cool shade to sit down and rest during the hottest hours of the day. Frozen food is part of the program intended to enrich animals’ life making adjustments to their environment and diet. Some species eat frozen food all over the year and others only in summer. The ingredients of the ice cubes depend on each animal eating behavior. Some of these cubes are made using celery, broccoli, and carrots, red and green sweet peppers, which are prepared for herbivores, while meat ice cubes are prepared for tigers and jaguars, and fish ice cubes for dolphins and sea lions. The purpose of this variation is to boost the development of the different animal species, proposing a challenging but positive change to their eating habits. Animals really enjoy this change in their menus. The ice creams are for them, as well as they are for children, a reward that zookeepers bring them and they are willing to receive. Chimps are the ones that get more exited when they see the zookeepers approaching with the ice cream buckets and they usually rush towards the ice cubes. The ice creams for animals are prepared in ice cubes and plastic glasses with frozen water and food. Apart from a cold diet, animals’ keepers also provide the animals showers to take a dip. This way, varied species of animals take refreshing showers that keep them cool during hot weather.

The Oceanogràfic zoo at “La Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias” in Valencia counts from last Thursday with four newborn Gentoo penguins and five sea lion babies that will be added to the number of recent births that include ten smooth hounds, three eagle rays and a pelagic stingray born in the aquarium.

The four gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) are increasing the existing penguins’ population of the aquarium that already counts with 15 specimens living in the “Antarctic” facility. These birds have an incubation period that varies from 36 to 41 days, and the offsprings depend on their parents for their survival during their first 70 to 75 days of life when their parents regurgitate food to feed them.

According to the information provided by the Generalitat in a press release, the penguin’s chicks are in good health conditions. Besides, they are expecting new births in September because some other penguins’ couples have made new nests. After the birth of all the Gentoo penguins, the Oceanogràfic will incorporate four King penguins.

Regarding sea lions, the five newborns weighted between 10 and 12 kilograms. Four of them are female and one is male. These sea lion babies will be breastfed by their mothers for five months. After this period, they will start eating fish. These mammals can gain about half a kilogram per day.

Sea lions live in a facility called “Islands”, which is located outdoors and imitates the rocky islands in the South American coastline. Counting these newborns the number of sea lions in the Oceanogràfic reaches twenty two specimens.

Since the aquarium started their breeding program several years ago, it have been born a variety of specimens in their facilities including Gray Reef sharks, Chilean flamingos, bottlenose dolphins, sea lions, seals and penguins among others.

During the last three months it have been born 10 smooth hounds (Mustelus mustelus), three eagle rays (Myliobatis aquila) and a pelagic stingray (Pteroplatytrygon violacea), which are located in quarantine tanks and fed with small squid, herring, prawn and hake bites.

Loro Parque is celebrating this summer the birth of two new Californian sea lions in their theme park and zoo located in Tenerife.

The new sea lion babies weighted about 9 kilograms each and are looked after and breastfed by their mothers, who spend all the time with them in and outside the water. Counting these two new specimens, the number of sea lions born in the park rises to 17, being a proof of the excellent living conditions the animals have in Loro Parque as well as in the Siam Park, which counts with 25 sea lions.

This new sea lion babies are males and they spend most of the time with their mothers while they swim or play at the special area Loro Parque has for them. After being breastfeed for a year, they will start eating fish and become more independent being able to join other members of the group. These new animals don’t have a name yet, therefore, Loro Parque has launched a campaign through Facebook to propose names for them and vote for the best ones.

The Californian sea lions (Zalophus californianus) are fin-footed marine mammals part of the eared seal family (Otariidae) who live in the northern coastline of the Pacific Ocean. They characterize for the size difference between males and females. Males weight between 300 and 380 kilograms while females usually weight from 90 to 100 kilograms.
