Following the death of Alexis Martínes, an Orca trainer from Loro Park (Tenerife), the company denies wrong practices and assures that complies fully with the current ZOO regulations. They maintain that their installations in the island of Tenerife exceed the legal requirements currently in force to zoos and that is not true that they carry out “bad practices” as assured by Ecologists in Action.
In addition to this, the dolphinarium assures that is completely false that the orca Tillikun caused an accident in Loroparque, given that this animal has never been at their installations, since it belongs to the Sea World group located in USA, not Mexico. Loro Park does not harbors any wild orca, since all have born inside a in captivity program.
Ecologists in Action denounced “bad practices”, but so far does not explain what exactly the bad practices are, although some people criticizes the size of the water tanks – not just the loroparque but all the dolphinariums in general..
Nevertheles, Loro Park complies fully with the regulations currently in force of zoos —1999/22 CE, Law 31/2003— in relation to the management of animals, as well as of protocols for security of the animals. All the transfers, within or outside the contries are supervised and authorized previously by the Authority CITE.
In Loro park’s defence, they are the first zoological one in the world in to have obtained the Animal certificate Embassy, offered by the Institute of Responsible Tourism (connected to UNESCO), as well as the certificate EMAS and ISO 14,001 accredited by the environmental quality and animal welfare.
Update: Bellow is a video of the Orcas shows. IT IS NOT THE VIDEO OF THE ACCIDENT!, but you can get the idea of how the show looks like and the size of the water tanks
