The Council of Tenerife has released an official announcement for the presentation of a tourist signposting plan in the municipalities of ‘Puerto de la Cruz’ and ‘Santiago del Teide’ according to the decision taken by the members of the council during their weekly meeting. The selection process and development of this plan will be managed by ‘Turismo de Tenerife’, in the framework of the ‘Plan de Dinamización del Producto Turístico Tenerife Acoge’ (Tenerife Welcome – Tourist Product Boosting Plan). A similar plan was developed in the areas of Arona and Adeje. José Manuel Bermúdez, vice-councillor and tourism councillor of the island, explained that the objective of this plan is to “improve the access of the tourists to these areas of Tenerife”.
Bermúdez also said that “our goal is to improve the polices focused on the design of a sustainable tourist offer beyond the sun and beach offer we have nowadays, having as objective to boost the cultural heritage, local culture and traditions, and leisure and nature offer. For this reason, we have to improve the access of the tourists to the cultural and natural resources Tenerife has”. According to the result of a research conducted on this matter, it is necessary to improve the signposting of the area due to the increase in the use of rental and private cars by the tourists who need more tourist information available in these regions.
Nowadays, the tourist signposting in these areas is not updated and presents problems to access the main tourist areas and resources. Apart from that, there isn’t a unified criterion for the signposting design which also needs maintenance.
This plan is specially intended to improve the signposting of Santiago del Teide including areas such as ‘Playa de la Arena’, ‘Puerto Santiago’, ‘Acantilado de los Gigantes’ and the urban area. With regards to Puerto de la Cruz, the signposting plan includes the entire municipality. Its development is planned in several stages including: the analysis of the conditions of the signposting in these areas, the plan and signposting manual drafting, and the project execution planning.
The signposting design for Puerto de la Cruz and Santiago del Teide will take into account its legibility and number, and also the standardization of them to meet the standards of the comprehensive plan of tourist signposting in Tenerife and the highways of the island.
This signposting plan is developed in the framework of the ‘Tenerife Welcome – Tourist Product Boosting Plan’ and counts with the participation of the highways department, the environment and culture department, and the heritage department of the Tenerife’s Council. Almost 300 of the most important tourist areas will be included in this signposting plan. The ‘Tenerife Welcome’ plan is an initiative developed by three public entities: the Council of Tenerife, the tourism department of the Canarias government and the national government. This plan is intended to boost the current tourist offer and create new tourist products. The agreement was signed in 2007 and counts with a budget of 3,640,000 for a three-year-period.
